Asian shares and euro ease

December 23rd, 2011 by admin

Fitch issues warning again to U.S.On Thursday, Asian shares fell and the single currency, euro, struggled as doubts remained over how much of the funds that banks raised from an inaugural long-term European Central Bank tender would actually flow into struggling euro zone economies and help restore confidence.

MSCI’s broadest index of Asia Pacific shares outside Japan .MIAPJ0000PUS fell 0.7 percent and Tokyo’s Nikkei stock average .N225 ended down 0.8 percent.

The euro was virtually unchanged around $1.3043 after reaching a one-week high near $1.32 on Wednesday.

“The ECB’s funding operation is not a fundamental fix to the euro zone’s debt problems and is only a way to buying time, so flight-to-safety bids remain firmly in place,” said Shinsuke Kanabu, general manager at Central Tanshi, a Japanese money brokerage.

US businesses hesitant to open in Mexico

May 20th, 2011 by admin

US businesses hesitant to open in MexicoThe battle between drug traffickers and the army near the city of Monterrey in Mexico is threatening US businesses to stay away from Mexico.

Organized criminals are increasingly turning to kidnappings, extortion, and cargo thefts despite a government offensive against drug cartels and this has became a worrying fact for US businesses.

From news.yahoo.com:

As a result, only half of the U.S. firms surveyed recently by the U.S.-Mexico Chamber of Commerce said they would go ahead with new investment plans in Mexico and several companies, including Whirlpool Corp., have recently announced they would put new factories elsewhere citing concerns about safety.

More than 35,000 people have died in drug-related violence since President Felipe Calderon deployed thousands of federal security forces four years ago to fight traffickers. In recent months, nearly 400 bodies have been pulled from mass graves in the northern states of Tamaulipas and Durango. There are near-daily reports of drug-gang executions, kidnappings and extortion.

The army said the Mattel workers were apparently caught in crossfire on May 6 when attackers believed to be working for the Zetas cartel assaulted a military convoy with guns and a grenade launcher from a highway overpass on the outskirts of Monterrey.

“The people of Mattel were shocked and incredibly saddened” by the attack, the company said in a statement released by spokesman Jules Andres.

But battles between government and cartel forces are increasingly common, and companies and their workers are inevitably affected.

“These acts of violence are not happening in a vacuum; they’re happening in the street that could be right out in front of your building. Bullets get shot and they have to stop somewhere,” said Dan Burges, a senior director at Freightwatch Inc., an Austin-based cargo security firm.

I said to myself, I have things in my head that are not like what anyone has taught me – shapes and ideas so near to me – so natural to my way of being and thinking that it hasn’t occurred to me to put them down. I decided to start anew, to strip away what I had been taught. – Georgia O’Keeffe

The true secret of giving advice is, after you have honestly given it, to be perfectly indifferent whether it is taken or not, and never persist in trying to set people right. – Hannah Whitall Smith

But the fact that some geniuses were laughed at does not imply that all who are laughed at are geniuses. They laughed at Columbus, they laughed at Fulton, they laughed at the Wright brothers. But they also laughed at Bozo the Clown. – Carl Sagan

Optimism finally felt by small business owners

September 10th, 2010 by admin

Optimism finally felt by small business ownersAccording to a recently released survey, small businesses in the United States are now more optimistic than they have been in the last 2 years. Though small business owners expressed optimism about the economic outlook, they were reluctant to expand staffs and boost capital spending.

The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) said 7 out of the 10 index components rose as per its survey but capital expenditure and job creation plans barely gained and were the same as those during the recession.

From Foxsmallbusinesscenter.com:

NFIB chief economist William Dunkelberg said the biggest concern of small business owners is weak sales and until that turns around, they will not be inclined to hire new staff or invest in new equipment.

The NFIB survey of 823 businesses through the end of May showed that more small businesses are experiencing weakening sales than are enjoying sales improvement. Widespread price cutting was also reported, it said. May was the 18th consecutive month in which more business owners reported cutting average selling prices than raising them.

“The Fed is right, the likelihood of inflation breaking out in the near term is low, but the picture is changing and could change quickly,” the NFIB report concluded.

Small businesses account for about half of gross domestic product and many analysts do not see U.S. employment picking up much until small firms begin hiring.

The survey also disclosed that more small business owners expect market conditions to improve in the coming six months.

The true secret of giving advice is, after you have honestly given it, to be perfectly indifferent whether it is taken or not, and never persist in trying to set people right.  - Hannah Whitall Smith

Old men are fond of giving good advice, to console themselves for being no longer in a position to give bad examples.  – François La Rochefoucauld

Every man has the right to risk his own life in order to preserve it.  Has it ever been said that a man who throws himself out the window to escape from a fire is guilty of suicide?  – Jean-Jacques Rousseau

We should all be concerned about the future because we will have to spend the rest of our lives there.  - Charles F. Kettering

All my life I had been looking for something, and everywhere I turned someone tried to tell me what it was.  I accepted their answers too, though they were often in contradiction and even self-contradictory.  I was naïve.  I was looking for myself and asking everyone except myself questions which I, and only I, could answer.  It took me a long time and much painful boomeranging of my expectations to achieve a realization everyone else appears to have been born with:  that I am nobody but myself.  – Ralph Ellison, “Battle Royal”

The great majority of us are required to live a life of constant duplicity.  Your health is bound to be affected if, day after day, you say the opposite of what you feel, if you grovel before what you dislike, and rejoice at what brings you nothing but misfortune.  – Boris Pasternak

I am much better employed from every point of view, when I live solely for my own satisfaction, than when I begin to worry about the world.  The world frightens me, and a frightened man is no good for anything.  – George Gissing

The company will benefit from its Businessday presence by 8 journalists in Auckland through the expansion plans.

TV advertisements could be effective when seen with little attention

June 15th, 2010 by admin

TV advertisements could be effective when seen with little attentionAccording to a new research from the University of Bath, viewers pay less attention to creative television ads but could make themselves more vulnerable to message by the advertiser.

The study, published in the Journal of Advertising Research, made use of an eye-tracking device for measuring the real-time attention paid to a range of advertisements with different levels of emotional content.

From Sciencedaily.com:

Dr Robert Heath, from the University’s School of Management, who led the research team, said: “There has been a lot of research which shows that creative TV ads are more effective than those which simply deliver information, and it has always been assumed that it is because viewers pay more attention to them.

“But in a relaxed situation like TV watching, attention tends to be used mainly as a defence mechanism. If an ad bombards us with new information, our natural response is to pay attention so we can counter-argue what it is telling us. On the other hand, if we feel we like and enjoy an ad, we tend to be more trustful of it and therefore we don’t feel we need to pay too much attention to it.

“The sting in the tail is that by paying less attention, we are less able to counter-argue what the ad is communicating. In effect we let our guard down and leave ourselves more open to the advertiser’s message.

“This has serious implications for certain categories of ads, particularly ads for products that can be harmful to our health, and products aimed at children.

The research was carried out in conjunction with Dr Agnes Nairn, Professor of Marketing at EM-Lyon Business School and Research Fellow at the University of Bath’s School of Management, and Dr Paul Bottomley, Distinguished Research Fellow at Cardiff University’s Business School.
