In a response to a class action complaint filed in multi-district litigation, search engine giant Google has showed its arrogance by saying people can’t expect privacy when sending a message to a Gmail address.

Google’s brief said: “Just as a sender of a letter to a business colleague cannot be surprised that the recipient’s assistant opens the letter, people who use web-based email today cannot be surprised if their emails are processed by the recipient’s [email provider] in the course of delivery. Indeed, ‘a person has no legitimate expectation of privacy in information he voluntarily turns over to third parties.”

People who care about their email correspondents’ privacy should not use the Internet giant’s service, Consumer Watchdog said. “Google has finally admitted they don’t respect privacy,” said John M. Simpson, Consumer Watchdog’s Privacy Project director. “People should take them at their word; if you care about your email correspondents’ privacy don’t use Gmail.”

“Google’s brief uses a wrong-headed analogy; sending an email is like giving a letter to the Post Office,” said Simpson. “I expect the Post Office to deliver the letter based on the address written on the envelope. I don’t expect the mail carrier to open my letter and read it. Similarly when I send an email, I expect it to be delivered to the intended recipient with a Gmail account based on the email address; why would I expect its content will be intercepted by Google and read?”

Amazon CEO Buys Washington Post

Jeffrey P Bezos has agreed to buy the newspaper assets of The Washington Post Company for USD 250 million. This would be the maiden entry of the Amazon founder and chief executive officer into the newspaper industry.

“This will be uncharted terrain and it will require experimentation,” he said in an interview to The Washington Post. “There would be change with or without new ownership.

But the key thing I hope people will take away from this is that the values of The Post do not need changing. The duty of the paper is to the readers, not the owners,” he said.

“This is a day that my family and I never expected to come. The Washington Post Company is selling the newspaper that it has owned and nurtured for eight decades,” The Washington Post publisher Katharine Weymouth, said in a note to Post employees.

In the last few years, the newspaper industry has seen a decline in circulation and a drastic drop in print revenue.

Bezos himself will buy the news organization and become its sole owner when the sale is completed, probably within 60 days and the Seattle-based Amazon will have no role in the purchase.

“The rise of the Internet and the epochal change from print to digital technology have created a massive wave of competition for traditional news companies, scattering readers and advertisers across a radically altered news and information landscape and triggering mergers, bankruptcies and consolidation among the owners of print and broadcasting properties,” the daily said.
