Thousands of India illegally entering US

February 15th, 2011 by James

Thousands of India illegally entering USThe Los Angeles Times has called ‘a mysterious and rapidly growing human-smuggling pipeline’ to illegal entry of thousands of Indians through Mexico last year.

Most of these immigrants are young men from poor villages of Punjab or Gujarat states and are fleeing religious and political persecution according to a report from Harlingen on the southern tip of Texas.

From in.news.yahoo.com:

More than 1,600 Indians have been caught since the influx began early last year, while an undetermined number, perhaps thousands, are believed to have sneaked through undetected, according to US border authorities, it said.

Hundreds have been released on their own recognizance or after posting bond, the Times said. ‘They catch buses or go to local Indian-run motels before flying north for the final leg of their months-long journeys.’

The trend has caught the attention of anti-terrorism officials because of the pipeline’s efficiency in delivering to America’s doorstep large numbers of people from a troubled region.

Authorities interview the immigrants, most of whom arrive with no documents, to ensure that people from neighbouring Pakistan or Middle Eastern countries are not slipping through.

But there is no evidence that terrorists are using the smuggling pipeline, FBI and Department of Homeland Security officials were quoted as saying.

Kumar Kibble, deputy director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE was quoted as saying by the Times, says migration is the ‘most significant’ human-smuggling trend being tracked by US authorities.

Indian students hit by UK visa curbs

February 12th, 2011 by James

Indian students hit by UK visa curbsAn industry body has said that the number of Indians coming to Britain for MBA degrees will reduce with the country’s move to abolish the visa that allows Indian and other non-EU students to take up employment in the UK for two years after the completion of their courses.

The proposed move was of ”significant concern”, and would restrict enrolment of international students from India and elsewhere, according to the London-based Association of MBAs, which accredits business management courses in 70 countries, including the UK.

From in.news.yahoo.com:

In a speech last week, immigration minister Damian Green said that non-EU students could not be allowed unfettered access to the UK labour market amidst growing unemployment in Britain.

He said: “The post study work route was intended to form a bridge between study and skilled work, allowing all international graduates to remain for two years after graduation… To allow unfettered access to the jobs market for two years to anyone with a student visa from abroad is putting an unnecessary extra strain on our own graduates”.

Noting that India and China are two of the UK”s biggest markets for international students, the association said in its response to the consultation on the student visa review that the UK must do all it can to remain competitive in the highly skilled business education sector.

“Turning students away by restricting their access to post-study employment puts their reputations at stake and threatens future viability,” it said.

The association said MBA international students bring “a high level of income for UK universities at a time when they are struggling for funding.”

USD 1,000 stock bonus offered by IBM to staff

Technology giant IBM recently said that it will be providing USD 1,000 worth of shares to its over one lakh employees in India as part of its centennial celebrations.

IBM will give each of its employees globally a USD 1,000 stock bonus.

From in.finance.yahoo.com:

IBM employees globally, except those at the executive level, will receive USD 1,000 in stock bonuses,” an IBM India spokesperson said.

He, however, declined to comment on IBM’s India headcount, since the company does not disclose country-level employee numbers.

However, industry analysts peg the strength of the company’s India-based workforce at over one lakh. IBM has four lakh employees globally.

“The company is still working on the eligibility criteria for the bonus. However, one of the criteria is that the person has to be an employee (full-timers and part-timers included) of IBM or its wholly-owned subsidiaries before December 31, 2010,” he said.

Eligible IBM employees will be offered ”restrictive stock units” (RSU), under which the employee will be promised returns on the stocks awarded without actually owning them.

The technology giant will celebrate a hundred years of existence on June 16 this year.

January is best month for promotions

February 2nd, 2011 by James

January is best month for promotionsJanuary is the best month of the year in many countries to boost a professional career and get a promotion.

An analysis of data on the professional networking site LinkedIn suggested that January, June and July are the top months for professionals for moving up the corporate ladder within their companies in the U.S.

From in.finance.yahoo.com:

LinkedIn, which has 90 million members worldwide, speculated that one reason why January is so popular for career advancement is that is coincides with the financial year.

“We looked at 12 countries, including the U.S.,” said Krista Canfield, a spokeswoman for LinkedIn . “If you look at India’s data we also see a spike in April and it turns out that April is when India’s fiscal year is.”

Another theory is that it is easier for companies to deal with promotions after the winter or summer holidays.

‚ÄúSeptember comes up as a really good time for people in France to go and try for a promotion, besides January, which is also a good month,” she added.

Promotions were also more common in September in Spain.

LinkedIn analyzed nearly 3 million intra-company job promotions from data on its website from January 1990 to December 2010. Although January is still the most popular month, the company noticed that from about the year 2000 more promotions started occurring during other times of the year.

“It was becoming less likely that you would only get promoted in January and more likely you would get promoted during other months of the years,” Canfield explained.

January is also a good month for promotions in India, along with April, July and October, and in France, Australia, Canada, Germany, Brazil, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and Britain.
